Over this month God has been teaching me many things. One of the things that He’s been teaching me is how to love unconditionally and how to walk in love. A verse that the Holy Spirit has put on my heart to work towards as a goal would be 1 Corinthians 13:4-6. This verse states “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”
After reading and re-reading this verse the Holy Spirit showed me that in order to love in a Godly manner I have to be patient, kind, content, humble, respectful, selfless, calm, peaceable, and forgiving (on top of many other things). However, looking at some of the situations I was going through at the time, these actions were and can still be easier said than done. When I’m walking in my flesh it’s easy to to love people conditionally. It’s a great deal easier to stay angry and bitter, than to show the love of Christ. Why? Because when I love conditionally I’m more focused on myself and how I’ve been treated, and to truly love like Christ takes work. Unconditional love is sacrificial and humble, and thinks of others before itself.
Obviously, a love like this can’t come from myself. For in myself and my sinful nature nothing good dwells (Romans 7:18). The only way that I will ever be able to love unconditionally like 1 Corinthians says is through Christ. 1 John 4:19 states, “We love because He first loved us”. And how true this is! Through Christ and Christ alone I am able to overcome all temptations, rejoice, and love; because of the great and amazing love that He has shown all of us! No, to love like Christ loved is not easy, but by His strength and perseverance I am able to show true love to everyone, even when it’s not the easiest.
